A lot of what went down in Las Vegas the weekend before Caleb* married the love of his life 18 years ago has faded from memory. What he will always remember is the “stock tip” he received from one of his groomsmen.
“He was my college roommate, and he was a real techie,” Caleb recalls. “He was into everything that had to do with computers and software, and he was telling us all about this software that people were using to create some new kind of currency or coin.
“He said people were selling these coins like they were stocks for two or three dollars apiece, and he suggested we pool our money and buy a bunch of ’em. Just for the fun of it, we all threw $50 into the pot and said, Sure, why not?
“I never thought anything would come it, but what he ended up buying was Bitcoin. He bought $300 worth, and I don’t want to say what it amounted to in the end, but it grew to a point a couple of years ago where we all decided, rather wisely I’d say, to cash out.”
Wisely indeed, because Caleb’s “$50 investment” netted him enough that he has a chance to retire early. Good thing, too, because there was a time not long ago when Caleb thought he might soon be forced into retirement by unrelenting back pain.
“My back was injured in an automobile accident about 10 years ago,” Caleb details. “Since then, I’ve had two surgeries and doctors have tried a few other treatments, but none of them did anything to ease the pain.”
Caleb’s pain was so great that he couldn’t sit or stand for long periods of time. He felt best when laying down, but he often struggled to sleep because of his pain. He was forced to abandon a lot of activities as well.
“I used to play a lot of pickup basketball to stay in shape,” Caleb notes. “I used to work out at the gym regularly, too, at least three days a week. The pain was so great that I had to give up both of those, and I started gaining weight, which irritated me even more.”
