Breakthrough For A Broken Ankle

Regenerative medicine ends a long-running battle with joint pain

The first stop Chad* did after he was released from the hospital following a two-day stay to repair a burst appendix was head for the nearest liquor store.

But, of course, it was. For years, the nearest liquor store was the first place Chad headed to no matter where he was coming from.

Such was the life that Chad led until one day, while homeless and sleeping under a bench in Chicago’s Grant Park, he decided to make a change.

“I figured that the best way for me to get out of the rut I was in was to force myself to focus on something else,” Chad reasoned. “So, I went back to school. And it worked.

“After moving into a homeless shelter, I started taking classes at a community college. The grades I made there were good enough to get me into DePaul University, where I earned a degree in accounting.”

Chad used that degree to land a job with an accounting firm in the city, where he stayed until 12 years ago, when he moved to Florida. Now 52, Chad has been sober for 28 years, but for several of those years, he struggled with the effects of another ailment from his past.

“Not long after I took that job with the firm in Chicago, I injured my right ankle playing tennis with an associate from work,” Chad reveals. “At first, I thought it was just a bad sprain, so I never had it checked out or anything. I just hobbled around on it.

“That wasn’t the smartest thing to do, obviously, because that ankle was never the same after that. It eventually healed to a point where I could walk normally and even run on it a bit, but if I tried to do anything really stressful on it, I’d feel it or injure it again.

“And that’s exactly what happened two years ago. A bunch of friends were putting together a pickleball team and asked me if I’d like to join them. I thought, It’s pickleball. It can’t be that stressful, right? Wrong.

“Even in these recreational co-ed leagues, people take it pretty seriously, and one night, during a match, I went for a ball and turned that ankle again. This time the pain didn’t go away. Finally, after hobbling around on it for a month, I went to a doctor.”

During the doctor’s visit, Chad received the first of several cortisone shots. Those shots proved effective, but the effects only lasted a few months. Frustrated, Chad later went in search of a more permanent solution, which he eventually found at QC Kinetix.

State-of-the-Art Treatment

A local practice with a national reputation, QC Kinetix offers drug-free regenerative medicine treatments for soft tissue pain, joint pain and musculoskeletal conditions.

As an alternative to medications and surgeries, QC Kinetix treatments trigger the body’s ability to repair itself using healing properties found in the blood.

That blood is gathered from the patient during a typical blood draw, then placed in a centrifuge, where the healing properties are separated and extracted. The healing properties are then used to treat the patient’s damaged tissue or joint.

The process sparks a tissue regeneration that allows the damaged area of the body to rebuild itself over a few weeks or months.

“Regenerative medicine is a great alternative for many people who previously thought surgery was their only option,” says Tanvir Dara, MD, medical director of QC Kinetix Gulf Coast, which has locations in Fort Myers and Naples.

Dr. Dara is a strong believer in regenerative medicine and the positive impact it can have. He chose to offer that treatment through QC Kinetix in an effort to better serve this group of patients and give them a less invasive treatment alternative.

“I am Board Certified in both emergency medicine and internal medicine, and I know that people who go to an orthopedic surgeon for pain are commonly told they may need surgery,” Dr. Dara explains. “And I understand that there is a time and place for surgery. But if there exists an alternative to surgery such as what we have at QC Kinetix with our state-of-the-art regenerative treatment, then the benefit of not having surgery is tremendous.

“At QC Kinetix we offer patients an alternative to surgery, pain medications and steroids for their joint pain. That is exactly what QC Kinetix and its regenerative medicine treatments do.”

Though it is on the leading-edge of medical science, regenerative medicine is not a new concept. Its most basic principles have been practiced for years. At QC Kinetix, the process has been updated to provide better results.

For example, QC Kinetix uses state-of-the-art equipment that allows for the retrieval of the most beneficial healing factors from blood. It can also obtain components from young blood cells with extensive self-renewal properties.

QC Kinetix works with patients across multiple visits, providing drug-free treatments that are customized for each case. Symptom improvement is then monitored for several months while patients experience no downtime. Most patients complete their treatments within six months and experience ongoing benefits from them.

“Another feature that sets QC Kinetix apart is that we do all of this in-house,” Dr. Dara points out. “Your blood, your tissue never leave our office. And we do all this while you’re in the office. When we’re done, you simply go about your normal activities.”

Custom Care

Regenerative medicine treatments can be used to treat arthritis pain and pain from muscle or tendon tears almost anywhere in the body, including the knees and shoulders, ankles and wrists, hips, low back and neck.

“Each patient’s treatment plan is based on his or her specific condition,” says Dr. Dara, who works with Chelsea Taylor PA-C, and Laura Riley NP at QC Kinetix in Fort Myers and Naples. “From a single blood draw, we extract different components of the blood that are used to treat the area of concern.”

Each treatment acts as a building block for the next, according to the QC Kinetix team, which provided Chad with six treatments across a six-month period. Chad says he began to feel the positive effects of those treatments almost immediately.

“I noticed a difference within about two weeks of receiving the first treatment,” Chad confirms. “At first, I thought, Maybe I’m just having a good day. But that good day turned into a good weekend and then a good month.

“Now, after completing the full course of treatments, I feel as if I never had a problem with that ankle at all. It feels great, and that’s allowing me to do a lot of things that I was hesitant to do before, like jog and, yes, play pickleball at a competitive level.

“The best thing is that I no longer have to baby that ankle. I can push it as if nothing ever happened, so I could not be happier with the results of my QC Kinetix treatments. They were just what I needed. And the fact that this was a nonsurgical option was a big plus.

“And there was no downtime. None at all. That’s another plus, especially for someone who wants to be active, so I absolutely recommend QC Kinetix. The doctors and techs they have there are great, and what they did for me has made my life better.”
