Revolutionary Incontinence Treatment: The BTL Emsella Chair’s Success Story

Explore the non-invasive and effective BTL Emsella chair therapy that brought life-changing results for Lisa and many others, with a 95% improvement rate

Jordan Pysz / iFoundMyDoctor.com Lisa suffered from urinary incontinence for nearly a decade, but those problems were alleviated in a matter of weeks through treatment on the BTL Emsella chair.

As they walked away from the ice-cream vendor at the Daytona Beach flea market, each with a two-scoop cone, Lisa Shuffle handed her cone to her sister, pulled her cellphone from her pocket and snapped a photo of her sister. “I did it as a joke, thinking that a picture that made it look like she was eating two cones at once would be kind of funny,” Lisa remembers. “And it was funny. As I took the picture, though, I laughed so hard that I had a little (urinary) accident. “Except it wasn’t little at all. I was wearing a dress that day, and so right there at my feet was this huge puddle. It was so embarrassing, and what made it worse was that this man with a mop had to come over and clean it up. That’s when I knew I had a real problem.” The problem that Lisa experienced that day is called urinary incontinence. It is an involuntary loss of urine that is most often caused by a weakening of the bladder or pelvic floor muscles, an overactive bladder or nerve damage. The condition typically presents itself as a strong urge to urinate or an inability to hold urine when the urge arises, and it most often affects older women, those who are pregnant or have had children, or those who are going through menopause. As with Lisa, a 75-year-old retired schoolteacher who suffered with the condition for nearly 10 years, leakage episodes can be triggered by something as simple as a laugh, a cough or a sneeze. “Laughing was the thing that did it for me,” Lisa confirms. “I was very uneasy about laughing, and that was a big problem for me anytime I was around my sister because she is one who can always make me laugh. “For years, whenever we got together, I had to make sure I was wearing protective pads because I was afraid I’d have an episode. Later on, I started wearing pads during the day and even at night because I couldn’t always make it to the bathroom in time.” Lisa first sought medical help for this disturbing issue a few years ago, but her gynecologist offered no solution. Then, late last year, Lisa stumbled on a solution while visiting her new primary care physician at West Volusia Family and Sports Medicine. “I was in the doctor’s office waiting to see my nurse practitioner when I noticed a poster on the wall that said, Do you suffer from urinary incontinence?” Lisa remembers. “I thought, Well, yes I do, and so I asked about it.”

Something for Everyone

Lisa’s primary care physician is John M. Hill, MD. He is the owner of West Volusia Family and Sports Medicine, which specializes in preventive care, health maintenance, disease management and the treatment of sports injuries. The practice also offers a variety of aesthetic services, including BTL Emsculpt NEO®, laser hair removal, Opus Plasma® facial tightening and resurfacing, and facials using the Obagi® Skintrinsiq™ device as well as treatment for incontinence with the BTL Emsella® chair. The BTL Emsella chair is just that, a chair that patients sit on. While the patient sits comfortably and fully clothed, the chair stimulates the body’s pelvic floor muscles and restores neuromuscular control by delivering high-intensity electromagnetic energy to those muscles. Each BTL Emsella chair session lasts 28 minutes, and during that time, the chair produces muscle contractions that mimic the effects of 12,000 pelvic-floor-tightening Kegel exercises, far more than any person can do on their own in that span of time. The muscle contractions produced by the BTL Emsella chair can be felt as deep as 10 centimeters into the pelvic floor and are delivered throughout the pelvic region. As a result, treatments can also be used to treat fecal incontinence. “They can also help improve sexual wellness in men and women,” says Jennifer Hill, RRT, the director of aesthetics at West Volusia Family and Sports Medicine. “For that we have a second protocol where the contractions are more intense than in the regular protocol for incontinence. “With both protocols, patients are treated twice a week for three weeks, but for patients who have been dealing with their incontinence for many years or have a very weak pelvic floor, we can do as many as 12 consecutive treatments.” Jennifer points out that an additional benefit is that the chair causes no side effects. Unlike other incontinence treatments, BTL Emsella chair therapy is noninvasive, and it allows patients to immediately return to normal activities. And best of all, it works. Studies show that 95 percent of patients receiving treatment on this drug-free device report improvement of incontinence symptoms while 73 percent report a complete resolution.

Life-Changing Results

When Lisa heard about BTL Emsella’s effectiveness, she decided to try it. She began treatments in March and is happy to say that urinary incontinence is now part of her past. “It was like a miracle happened because I’m a different person now, and I love it,” Lisa enthuses. “I don’t have to wear pads anymore because I don’t feel like I have to rush to get to the bathroom anymore, and I don’t leak even when I laugh. “I even passed the sister test. I saw my sister again not long after I completed the treatments, and I wore pads just to be safe, but I didn’t need them because I didn’t leak at all. And I laughed a lot while I was with her. I always do when I’m with my sister.” Because Lisa lived with urinary incontinence for years, she was encouraged to get what she referred to as “booster treatments” a few months after her original course ended. “It’s been a couple of months at least since I had those booster treatments and I was just thinking the other day that I don’t feel as if I’ll need them anymore,” she enthuses. “The BTL Emsella chair really changed my life and I would recommend it to anyone. “In fact, everyone who knows me knows I’ve had the treatment because I have not been shy about sharing my experience. I’ve even passed out some pamphlets that I got from West Volusia Family and Sports Medicine.”
