Few have packed more life-changing moments into a year than Dr. Shauna Berry over the past 12 months. In addition to opening her own pediatric ophthalmology practice, Dr. Berry also got married and became a mother.

“It has been quite a year,” says Dr. Berry, who topped off that momentous span in January by giving birth to a boy. “My life has changed completely since the start of 2023, but everyone is happy and healthy, and that’s what matters most.”

Amid all those signature changes was another that Dr. Berry made last year, this one a cosmetic change aimed at improving her smile.

“Back in 2005, I had veneers put on my teeth,” Dr. Berry offers. “I got them because as a kid I had braces and they left marks on my teeth. Not only that, but my top two front teeth were not aligned the way I wanted them to be, so that’s why I got the veneers.

“The problem was that it had obviously been a long time since I first got the veneers, and I was starting to have some issues with them. I was pretty sure they needed to be redone, so I decided to go ahead.”

Though they do not strengthen or repair the teeth, veneers are created and placed in much the same way as crowns. As such they are designed to provide a cosmetic enhancement to teeth that are discolored, chipped or have other imperfections.

Veneers typically last between 10 and 30 years, so it was not out of the ordinary for Dr. Berry to have noticed imperfections in the veneers she was fit with nearly 20 years ago. Those imperfections were not her only dental concern, however.

“My gum line had sort of receded upward, and I was never really happy with the way my top two front teeth looked,” she says. “I just felt like they were a little long and sort of leaning forward a bit, so I went to Dr. Ford to see if he could fix all of that.”

Remove and Replace

Jared T. Ford, DDS, and his staff at Ford Signature Dentistry combine years of experience with advanced technology to provide patients with a range of routine, preventative and restorative dental services.

On the advice of a friend she met in medical school, Dr. Berry first visited Ford Signature Dentistry in 2019 after moving back to Florida from California. She returned this past August to inquire about repairing her veneers.

“By the time Dr. Berry came back to me, some of her veneers were failing and some were just kind of wearing down,” Dr. Ford reports. “It was one of those situations where instead of working around one or two that were OK, it was better to just redo everything.”

That meant placing new veneers on all 10 upper teeth in her smile line. That process starts with the removal of the old veneers as well as any decay that has built up where the veeners meet the teeth.

“Veneers can be a game-changer for enhancing your smile and boosting your confidence.”

“So, we removed the old veneers, cleaned up any decay that she had and restored everything. She also had some gum recession, and we cleaned all of that up to make everything look a little better.”

A Seamless Procedure

At some practices, veneers can be made in-house. Dr. Ford employs several laboratories, including one in Los Angeles, to make his patients’ veneers. He says the lab’s expertise allows for the best possible outcomes.

“With the lab in L.A., a lot of its clientele are celebrities, and the quality of work is very high,” the doctor adds. “And that’s what we strive for, a high quality of work that leads to a more beautiful and natural-looking aesthetic result.”

That is the kind of result Dr. Berry was seeking, and she says she got it from Dr. Ford.

“I was very happy with the entire process. It was a very seamless procedure,” she enthuses. “And now, my teeth look great. Dr. Ford did a great job. His technique was superb, he did a great job of making sure I was never in any pain and he’s very personable.

“He has a great chairside manner, and he really takes his time with you and makes sure that you know exactly what to expect every step of the way. I think so highly of him and his work that I’ve even sent my husband and my dad to him. He’s kind of become our family dentist.”
