The Rosanova Method: Innovative Cataract Surgery

Explore Dr. Rosanova's unique approach to cataract surgery, combining advanced technologies and techniques for exceptional results

Bonita lauds Dr. Rosanova for his work and says she is seeing “perfectly” since undergoing cataract surgery.

The odds of an amateur golfer hitting a hole-in-one are pretty steep, about 12,500-1. Bonita Ferragut is among those who have beaten those odds. The 76-year-old also lays claim to scoring an eagle – two strokes under par – on the golf course. “I hit the hole-in-one on a par-3, of course, at Palm Gardens in Melbourne, a course that’s now closed,” she details. “I hit the eagle on a par-5 hole at Crane Creek Reserve, which is also in Melbourne. “Those are my two claims to fame on the golf course. And I’m really proud of them because my goal every round is just to break 100. That’s the level of player I am. I’m just out there to enjoy the game and the outdoors and have some fun.” Bonita has been enjoying the outdoors in Florida for about 12 years now. Along with her husband, she moved here from New Jersey, where she worked as a cardiac lab technologist at a small community hospital. “I worked at Mass General (hospital) in Boston before that,” Bonita shares. “We moved to Florida mostly for the weather and our health. And the golf. I usually play a couple of times a week, and even though I’m not that good, I really enjoy it.” A few years ago, Bonita’s enjoyment was curtailed a bit by a vision problem. She was having trouble seeing the golf ball clearly off the tee and often became bothered by the glare of the sun. At home, she was dealing with other issues. “It became hard for me to read, which I love to do, and on the television I had to make the closed captions as big as I could get them to be able to read them,” she laments. “When I went to my eye doctor to see what the problem was, he said, You’ve got cataracts.” Cataracts are a clouding of the lens caused by a buildup of protein deposits. The only treatment is surgery, which is typically performed on one eye at a time, with a break of a week or two in between. Each procedure takes only a few minutes and starts with the breakup and removal of the affected lens. Then, a replacement known as an intraocular lens, or IOL, is implanted, permanently correcting the vision. IOLs are made of acrylic or silicone and are coated with a material to protect the eye from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. During surgery, the IOL is rolled up and placed in the eye. Once in place, the lens is unfolded and side structures called haptics hold it in place. Like contact lenses, IOLs are available in different focusing powers. Standard IOLs correct primarily for distance vision, but patients can have one eye fixed for distance and the other eye fixed for reading or near vision, an option called monovision. A third option is multifocal IOLs. These are typically bifocal lenses that correct distance and either reading or intermediate vision, but there are also advanced trifocal options that correct distance, reading and intermediate vision.

The Rosanova Method

Bonita learned of her cataracts not long before her eye doctor retired and sold his practice to Mark A. Rosanova, MD. During her first visit with Dr. Rosanova, Bonita was so impressed that she decided to have him perform her cataract surgeries. “I loved the way he explained the entire procedure to me and that he has all of this state-of-the-art equipment,” Bonita shares. “With my medical background and everything, we just kind of hit it off right away, so I felt very comfortable with him.” Dr. Rosanova is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist renowned for his work over three decades in the field of cataract surgery, where patients consistently experience unsurpassable results with reduced recovery time. These outcomes are due largely to a unique pretreatment protocol that Dr. Rosanova has established for bladeless, computer-controlled, image-guided, laser-assisted cataract surgery. Known as The Rosanova Method, it combines the latest diagnostic technologies, formulas and algorithms with state-of-the-art IOLs, and uses two of the industry’s most advanced tools. One tool is Alcon’s Verion™ Image Guided System, which allows Dr. Rosanova to customize every aspect of the procedure, from measurements prior to surgery to precise IOL placement. The other is the LenSx® femtosecond laser. Femtosecond lasers cut tissue by emitting energy pulses at an extremely fast rate, one-quadrillionth (femto) of a second. The LenSx, also produced by Alcon, provides unmatchable precision that greatly decreases the amount of collateral damage to the eye during surgery. In addition to providing accuracy greater than can be obtained by hand, the LenSx laser can make incisions to relieve various amounts of astigmatism, which is an imperfection in the curvature of the eye that causes blurred vision. The LenSx also creates perfectly rounded openings that allow for the best positioning of replacement lenses. And, when used in combination with the Verion system and the most advanced replacement lenses, the result is an exceptional patient outcome. “When implanting an astigmatism-correcting lens using standard protocols, the benchmark data shows that 48 to 50 percent of all eyeballs come out seeing 20/20 or better,” Dr. Rosanova states. “When using my protocol, that number is 88.4 percent. “And those are the results of all lenses. If I narrow that down to patients receiving some of the advanced lenses that have only been available for the past year or two, the number of eyeballs seeing 20/20 or better following cataract surgery jumps to 97 percent.” In April 2022, Dr. Rosanova became the first surgeon in Brevard County to perform cataract removal using the LenSx.

A Brighter World

Bontia visited him a short time later. By then, she was experiencing all the symptoms associated with cataracts that are “ripe” for removal, including blurred vision, glare and fading colors. To correct those problems, Dr. Rosanova recommended fitting Bonita with Alcon’s PanOptix® replacement lenses. The PanOptix is a trifocal lens that allows patients to see clearly at near, far and intermediate distances. Dr. Rosanova chose a toric version of the PanOptix for Bonita because she had a great deal of astigmatism in both eyes. As is typical, he performed two surgeries, one on each eye, about two weeks apart. The results, Bonita says, are incredible. “Since having the surgery, I see everything perfectly,” she enthuses. “The whole world just seems brighter, clearer and more colorful, and I love that. I see so well now that I’m even driving at night again. That’s something I hadn’t done since I moved to Florida. “Even better, I don’t need to wear glasses anymore. I used to wear trifocals, and when I played golf, there was a transition I had to make between looking down at the ball on the tee and looking up after I hit it. But I don’t have to do that anymore. Everything happens naturally. “That’s amazing to me, and I just love it, and so I have a great deal of appreciation for Dr. Rosanova and what he’s done for me. His technique and the quality of his work are excellent, and I would absolutely recommend him to anyone. He’s amazing.”
