Andrea Nierenberg

If you looked at a map of the world with push pins shoved into all of the places that Andrea Nierenberg has traveled, the map would be so full of pins that you’d have trouble telling which countries she’s actually visited.

“I’ve been to 93 countries overall,” Andrea reports, “both for work and pleasure. People ask me all the time, What’s the most fascinating place you’ve been to? I would say that I’ve found Morocco, New Zealand and Thailand the most fascinating.”

A former magazine publisher and consultant, Andrea, 66, has also authored five books on networking and building relationships. As for hobbies, her favorite, outside of traveling, is ballroom dancing. A recent incident made dancing of any kind a bit difficult.

“A little more than a year ago, I was visiting friends at their house,” Andrea relates. “I brought a bottle of wine over, and as I was bringing it in, the paper bag I was carrying it in broke and the bottle fell on my left big toe.”

Over time, a fungus developed on the toenails on that foot, so her doctor referred her to Dawn Chiu, DPM, AACFAS, at Sarasota Foot and Ankle Center.

“The foot doctor who was treating my toe injury knows Dr. Chiu and told me that at Sarasota Foot and Ankle Center they have all the equipment needed to take care of the fungus,” Andrea remembers. “That’s how I wound up going to see Dr. Chiu.”

As she typically does with patients suffering from toenail fungus, Dr. Chiu recommended treating Andrea’s fungus with PinPointe FootLaser® therapy.

Dr. Chiu calls the therapy her “weapon of choice” in the battle against toenail fungus because it kills the underlying fungus without side effects and does not require patients to take a blood test prior to treatment.

“It’s an in-office treatment that lasts only a few minutes,” Dr. Chiu explains. “During that time, I pass the laser over the nail in a crisscross pattern to ensure full coverage. Patients usually feel a warmth on their toe during the treatment, but there’s no pain.”

Once the treatment is completed, patients are able to resume normal activities. When combined with topical ointments, the laser treatment has an 80 percent success rate, according to Dr. Chiu, who counts Andrea among her success stories.

“When I first went to see Dr. Chiu, my nails were very brittle, and they didn’t look very good,” Andrea shares. “She wound up treating all the toes on both feet, and because I dance a lot I still break a nail every now and then. But the fungus is all gone.

“I’m extremely grateful that I was referred to Dr. Chiu because she did a great job. The treatment was absolutely painless, and I highly recommend Dr. Chiu and Sarasota Foot and Ankle Center.”
