Buyer’s Market

Drug-free, nonsurgical decompression therapy relieves back pain.

If you or anyone you know has purchased a pre-owned car or truck from a dealership in or around DeLand in the past few years, there’s a good chance that car or truck came to that dealership through Stephen Kane.

Stephen, 61, is a car buyer. He’s been that for more than 40 years now, and he’ll tell you in no uncertain terms that buying pre-owned cars is not only a very competitive business, it is also an extremely taxing one.

“I’ll go to the auto auction and walk eleven miles a day sometimes looking at cars,” says Stephen, who buys cars for six DeLand area dealerships. “It’s a very challenging job. The whole process is challenging, especially when you find a good car.”

A very active guy, Stephen is no stranger to challenges. He loves to snow ski, work out and he rides a bike up to ten miles a day, three days a week. For a while last year, though, even the smallest of challenges was difficult for Stephen.

Irritated for years by back issues that date back to an auto accident he was involved in, Stephen suddenly became so impaired with back pain that he could barely even do his job, much less ski, work out or ride a bike.

“It wasn’t like I fell off a ladder or twisted myself getting into a car or anything,” Stephen says. “The pain just came on all of a sudden, and it hurt like crazy. It hurt so bad, I couldn’t even walk. One day, I literally had to crawl back to my car at the auto auction.”

Initially, Stephen tried alleviating his pain through common home remedies such as ice and heat. When none of those worked, he sought help from an acupuncturist and two chiropractors, but none of them could alleviate his discomfort.

Stephen then visited two neurosurgeons, both of whom diagnosed the problem as pinched nerves and recommended surgery. After nearly three months of suffering, Stephen grudgingly committed to surgery. But fate soon steered him in another direction.

“I was sitting at a traffic light one day, and I saw a sign for this place, DeLand Chiropractic and Spinal Decompression,” Stephen remembers. “I was scheduled to have the surgery in August, but when I saw that sign, I said, I’m going to check this place out.”

Time to Decompress

Stephen’s visit to DeLand Chiropractic & Spinal Decompression soon resulted in a meeting with the practice’s owner and clinical director, Jeremy M. Gordon, DC.

Dr. Gordon was quick to confirm the findings of the two neurosurgeons Stephen had visited previously.

“He’d had an MRI done in June of last year, and when he first came to see us in July, he brought that with him,” Dr. Gordon explains. “The MRI showed that he had a good-sized herniation at the very bottom of his back, at L5-S1.

“It also showed that that disc was pressing up against the nerve roots going down into his left leg. That was the cause of his severe, left-sided, lower back pain, which was radiating down his left leg and also causing him some numbness and tingling in his foot.

“Stephen’s main goal was to avoid surgery, and since he had already tried chiropractic and some other noninvasive therapies that hadn’t worked for him, we talked about trying spinal decompression, and he was open to that.”

“When I first went there, they told me that Dr. Gordon would get me right, and they were absolutely correct!” – Stephen

Spinal decompression is a drug-free, noninvasive, nonsurgical therapy that can be used to treat bulging, herniated or protruding spinal discs, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, neuropathy in the arms or legs and post-surgical neck and/or back pain.

At DeLand Chiropractic & Spinal Decompression, decompression therapy is delivered through a machine called the DRX9000, which has the capacity to produce 150 pounds of tractioning, decompressive force through gentle motion.

“If you want the best results for your patients, you need to have the best equipment,” Dr. Gordon explains. “That’s why we utilize the DRX9000 decompression system. In my opinion, it is unequaled in its design and clinical results.”

A typical spinal decompression treatment begins with the patient getting comfortable on the decompression table. The DRX9000 then creates a very gentle decompressive force on the patient’s damaged discs.

Those gentle decompressive forces reduce the pressure on the disc, which helps to pull some of the disc material back inward. The return of that disc material to its natural state alleviates the pain and rehydrates the injured disc.

The DRX9000 can be used to treat cervical and/or lumbar disc injuries through a treatment program that is typically comprised of 24 visits across ten weeks. Each visit lasts about an hour, with the first ten designed to determine the patient’s likely response.

“We start by treating patients five days a week for two weeks, and our goal is to see a fifty percent improvement in function and pain in those first ten visits,” Dr. Gordon educates. “If we see that improvement, we continue with the remaining fourteen treatments.”

That standard course of treatment has proven very effective. DeLand Chiropractic & Spinal Decompression has tracked the results of patients receiving its spinal decompression therapy for more than a decade, and their findings are remarkable.

“After tracking hundreds of patients, I am very proud to report that our patient satisfaction rate exceeds eighty percent,” Dr. Gordon proclaims. “That’s a much higher satisfaction rate than invasive surgery.”

Decompression treatments are typically followed by cold therapy and/or electrical muscle stimulation to restore proper muscle tone, decrease inflammation and maximize the effects of the treatment. It’s an all-inclusive therapy that literally worked wonders for Stephen.

Phenomenal Results

“When I met with Dr. Gordon for the first time and he looked at my MRI, he told me I had an eighty-five percent chance of getting better through spinal decompression therapy,” Stephen says. “That’s why I agreed to try it, and I’m so glad I did.

“At first and through about eighty percent of the treatments, I was getting some minor improvement. But the technician who worked with me, Kara, was great and said it would all come together very soon for me.

“She said, I can’t tell you that you’re going to feel anything like a snap, crackle or pop, but at some point, you’re just going to know it all worked, and then one day, I got out of bed and started walking and noticed how completely different I felt.

“All of a sudden, all the pain in my back was gone and my leg felt good, and I no longer had that numbing and tingling in my foot. After that, I just felt better and better, and then, more and more, my energy came back and I was able to start doing things again.”

One of the things Stephen started doing again was visiting a local gym, CrossFit Nika. With no back, leg or foot discomfort to hinder him, he started working out regularly and has since trimmed nearly 30 pounds off what had been a 250-pound frame.

“Now, I can do anything,” Stephen exudes. “I’m working out three times a week at the gym, and I’m bending down and squatting and doing lifts with barbells and dumbbells. I’m doing things I never thought I would be able to do, and it’s phenomenal.”

Stephen says he doubts he’d be doing any of the things he’s now doing without pain had he not visited DeLand Chiropractic & Spinal Decompression, which he further praised for its staff’s professionalism and dedication to patient care.

“When I first went there, they told me that Dr. Gordon would get me right, and they were absolutely correct!” Stephen exclaims. “It’s unbelievable how competent, how positive and how upbeat Dr. Gordon and everyone in that office is.

“I deal with a lot of people on a daily basis, and it’s rare that you get an office with people that are as good as they are and have personalities that mesh as well as theirs do. It’s one of the few places I’ve seen where it all really comes together.”
