Most everyone who has held a telephone conversation, whether using a modern-
day cell phone or an old-fashioned handset, has at one point or another rested the phone on their shoulder and tilted their head to hold the phone in place.

Longtime salesman Thom Giordano is here to tell you such a practice has consequences.

For two years, Thom, 61, spent the better part of every working day securing a phone in that manner while working in marketing for the Cleveland Indians Major League Baseball team. He’s been paying a painful price for it ever since.

“That spot on my left shoulder where I’d rest the phone became a stress point and weakened over time to where there was this constant pain,” Thom explains. “It started at the top of the shoulder and ran down into my shoulder blade.”

Though it was temporarily alleviated through physical therapy, Thom’s shoulder pain eventually returned. It nagged him for 30 years, and then, about a year ago, after Thom took a new sales job that requires him to spend long hours driving in his car, it became chronic.

“I steer with my left hand, so there was a lot of pressure and stress on that shoulder, and the pain became constant,” Thom says. “Then I read an article in Florida Health Care News about a practice that uses a unique procedure to alleviate pain and decided to try it.”

The practice Thom read about is Alpha Wave Health Centers. With offices in Leesburg and
St. Augustine, the practice specializes in the treatment of pain and other issues through the use of an acoustic wave therapy called AcuteWave Protocols
.

Advanced and Highly Effective

Known clinically as extracorporeal pulse activation technology, or EPAT®, Alpha Wave Health Centers’ AcuteWave therapy is the most advanced and highly effective noninvasive, drug-free treatment method cleared by the Food and Drug Administration.

AcuteWave treatments are performed during a noninvasive, in-office procedure that stimulates the metabolism, enhances blood circulation and accelerates the healing process, which allows damaged tissue to gradually regenerate and eventually heal.

The AcuteWave procedure has proven effective in the treatment of a broad range of musculoskeletal conditions in the neck, shoulder, back, chest, feet and ankles. It has also proven effective in the treatment of erectile dysfunction using the GAINSWave protocols.

“It also works well as a treatment for nerve damage and scar tissue,” says Scott Hollington, MD, of Alpha Wave Health Centers. “In fact, we can actually remodel scar tissue with this device, which is really quite phenomenal and very important.

“If you have scar tissue deep in your back, it can impinge on the nerves in your back. But this machine allows us to remodel that scar tissue, which can then cause your nervous tissue to stop being impinged on. That’s big.”

AcuteWave treatments are administered through a small, handheld device that emits the acoustical waves in short, painless pulsations. These pulsations impact the body in the same way that a deep tissue massage or a deep manipulation does.

Dr. Hollington notes that acoustic wave therapy provides immediate relief in some patients. Others take longer to feel its effects, but overall, the procedure eliminates pain and restores full mobility in more than 80 percent of patients treated.

“The numbers for people who use this treatment for pain relief are very good,” Dr. Hollington expounds. “Everyone gets some pain relief from it, and some get a lot of pain relief from it.”

Another great benefit of AcuteWave therapy, Dr. Hollington emphasizes, is that it helps eliminate the root cause of pain. That makes it far more effective than the medications that are often prescribed for such issues.

“There are a lot of causes of musculoskeletal pain,” Dr. Hollington states. “It can come from a pinched nerve or damaged muscles, tendons or joints, and these problems are often treated with opiates. But opiates just hide the symptoms. They don’t cure anything.

“Another pain management tool is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory treatments. These treatments reduce inflammation, which does exacerbate pain, but it’s not clear if eliminating the inflammation actually cures the underlying defect causing the pain.

“Our wave machine actually affects the tissues of the body. It produces these waves in a broad spectrum deep into your skin, probably four inches deep, so it hits the nerves, muscles and fibrous tissue, all without penetrating the skin.

“Even when we don’t know exactly where the lesion is, we can still help you because we treat the entire area where the problem arises from. And through this treatment, old vessels regenerate and new vessels form, which reduces pain.”

Rapid Results

Dr. Hollington diagnosed the underlying cause of Thom’s shoulder pain to be osteoarthritis. As he typically does with patients seeking relief from pain,Dr. Hollington recommended Thom undergo a series of nine AcuteWave treatments.

“The sessions are short, the results are long-lasting and the folks at Alpha Wave Health Centers do a great job.” – Thom

AcuteWave treatments take less than half an hour each at the clinic, and as often happens with patients suffering from chronic or acute pain, Thom began to notice a reduction in the pain and stiffness he was feeling after only a few treatments.

“I actually noticed a difference after the very first treatment,” Thom enthuses. “I could feel right away that my shoulder had loosened up, and by the time I was done with the third or fourth treatment, the pain was gone.

“The AcuteWave therapy worked tremendously, and it saved me the trouble of going and getting a massage, which was something I was doing every couple of months to try to alleviate some of the tension in that shoulder.

“In fact, that’s what the treatment felt like. I hesitate to use the word massage to describe it because that’s not what the machine does, but it released the tension and pressure in my shoulder and relieved the pain, which is why I recommend it.

“It’s a very effective treatment, the sessions are short, the results are longlasting and the folks at Alpha Wave Health Centers do a great job. The customer service there is wonderful, and everyone is very professional.”
