Vampire Facelift®

Natural growth factors in blood trigger facial rejuvenation.

Shirley Scott worked outside the home from the time she was 14 years old. The small-town Pennsylvania native is now 67, and her last job before retiring was director of operations for a solder and flux manufacturing company.Dr. Angela Keon of Center for Health in Punta Gorda performed a Vampire Facelift® on Shirley Scott of Port Charlotte.

By mid-2015, the image Shirley was seeing in the mirror began to disturb her.

“My face was dull,” she describes. “I thought it was really drawn. It lost its fullness and was flat. When you look at a person, sometimes you see a glow, and their face is full. Mine stuck to my bones. There wasn’t a whole lot of life there. My lips were also a problem. The left side of my top lip kind of disappeared.

“It’s not that my face was wrinkly. It was droopy. I decided I had to do something because my face looked horrible.”

Weary of the cold northern weather, Shirley and her husband decided to retire in sunny Florida, relocating south in 2014. New to the area, Shirley had no idea where to find a provider of facial cosmetic services.

Help came from an unlikely source, who recommended Angela M. Keon, MD, a family and cosmetic medicine specialist with Center for Health in Punta Gorda.

“Being new down here, I didn’t know who to go to,” confirms Shirley. “My hairdresser goes to Center for Health, and he suggested I talk to Dr. Keon. I really like my hairdresser, so I felt good about his recommendation. I called Dr. Keon’s office and made an appointment.”

Center for Health, its staff and Dr. Keon impressed Shirley from the moment she arrived.

“When I walked in, the staff was very friendly and nice, and it’s a beautiful facility,” states Shirley. “I loved Dr. Keon. She made the visit very comfortable. It felt like we’d known each other for years. She was the first doctor in my sixty-seven years of living who was totally truthful. That made me relax and trust her.”

Shirley made it clear to the doctor that she didn’t want invasive surgery; she had no interest in going under general anesthesia. Instead, Dr. Keon suggested a Vampire Facelift, a noninvasive, nonsurgical procedure that uses growth factors in the patient’s own blood to regenerate the face.

“Dr. Keon explained everything about the procedure,” remembers Shirley. “I was a little nervous about it, but I was very confident in her. I said, Let’s give it a shot.”

Stimulating Factors

The Vampire Facelift is used to correct fine lines and damaged skin, and to bring back volume to the face. The procedure harvests platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from the patient’s own blood. Natural growth factors in the PRP heal damaged skin and stimulate the production of new collagen, a structural protein found in connective tissue. The new collagen production rejuvenates the skin from the inside out.

“During the procedure, a small amount of blood is taken from the patient’s arm,” explains Dr. Keon. “The blood is put into a centrifuge, which separates the platelet-rich plasma from the other components of the blood. Afterward, the PRP is combined with calcium and infused back into the skin.

The PRP is injected into areas of the skin where there is dermal damage, a loss of volume or any need for cosmetic correction.”

“The results are fantastic. Dr. Keon made me look and feel really good, and so confident in myself.” – Shirley

PRP has been used for many years in different medical specialties, including orthopedics and sports medicine. In that case, the growth factors in the PRP provide tissue rejuvenation for injured athletes. Charles Runels, MD, the founder of the Vampire Facelift, initiated the application of PRP in cosmetic medicine.

“There are several growth factors, which work at different levels of the skin,” notes Dr. Keon. “Some work at the dermis, the thick skin beneath the outer layer. Some growth factors reactivate vascular endothelium, which is the lining of the blood vessels. Some affect the cells in the skin involved in the reparative process and stimulate neocollagenesis, the creation of new collagen by the patient’s own skin. These factors participate in rebuilding the skin.”

Dr. Keon adds that the Vampire Facelift works especially well in conjunction with fillers, such as JUVÉDERM®, and with BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, both of which are available at Center for Health. Results tend to be even better with the combined treatments because fillers provide a matrix on which the PRP can build, and BOTOX Cosmetic redefines fine lines and wrinkles.

“In addition to facial rejuvenation, the Vampire Facelift can also be used for other purposes, such as to treat acne scarring,” informs Dr. Keon. “Some patients who have undergone treatment with lasers can also benefit from PRP injections.”

The name Vampire Facelift originated with Dr. Runels. To offer this procedure, providers must be specially trained by Dr. Runels or his training group. In training, providers are taught the specific process of the Vampire Facelift technique.

“It is very important for anyone considering this procedure to educate himself or herself and to choose a provider who is trained to perform the Vampire Facelift,” emphasizes Dr. Keon. “More information and a list of certified providers are available on the official website,”

Fantastic and Confident

Shirley’s goal in having a facial cosmetic procedure was not to look 20 again. She simply desired her face to appear refreshed and healthy. She believes Dr. Keon was right on target using the Vampire Facelift.screen-shot-2017-02-14-at-2-31-25-pm

“I just wanted to look decent for my age,” she shares. “And boy, did Dr. Keon do a fabulous job. The Vampire Facelift didn’t make me look really young; it just made me look nice. My husband is very happy, too.”

Shirley’s husband wasn’t the only one to notice the difference in her. Friends and acquaintances realized a positive change in Shirley’s face, but they couldn’t explain how it was different. Dr. Keon’s exceptional technique left Shirley’s face with a more youthful, yet natural appearance.

“People I’ve met down here have asked me what I’ve done because my face looks so much fuller,” relates Shirley. “My lip has also been corrected. When people say I look nice, I don’t want to tell them what I did, so I just say, Thank you.

“The Vampire Facelift was absolutely a success, and I recommend it to others. The results are fantastic,” she adds.
“Dr. Keon made me look and feel really good, and so confident in myself.”
