Smile of a Lifetime

Comprehensive reconstruction project produces show-off smile.

Retired certified nurse’s assistant Karen Francis is by no means lazy, but she freely admits she spent years neglecting her oral health – so much so that she required substantial dental care to put a smile back on her face.

“My teeth were really quite embarrassing,” shares the Wisconsin native who moved to Florida in 1973. “I had a top front tooth missing, and everything else was pretty crooked. I wouldn’t show my smile to anyone. I actually hid my mouth behind my hand.”
Knowing she needed extensive care, Karen eventually began looking for a qualified dentist in the Spring Hill area. She eventually narrowed her list to three providers and met with each one individually to evaluate their capabilities.
“The first dentist I interviewed could take care of everything but the orthodontics I needed,” Karen recalls. “The second didn’t even notice on my x-ray that I had an infection in my jawbone, and it was almost an hour after my appointment time before I saw him.”
The third dentist Karen interviewed was Satnam S. Bedi, DMD, of Anchor Dental Care. The first thing Karen noted about Dr. Bedi was that he could provide all of the services necessary to rehabilitate her smile.
“Dr. Bedi sat me down and held a really good conversation with me,” Karen reports. “He explained everything he needed to do, and that was important. I wasn’t left in the dark. He explained exactly what would be going on and so I chose him as my dentist.”

Complex Cases Solved

Dr. Bedi specializes in complex smile reconstruction cases such as Karen’s. To achieve his objectives, he offers a full line of dental services, from routine dental care to cosmetic dentistry and more.
“Other services we provide include crowns and bridges, oral and periodontal surgery, root canal therapy, TruDenta® headache and migraine treatment, and orthodontic services, including Invisalign® clear aligners,” Dr. Bedi discloses. “And with our on-site laboratory, we’re also able to perform denture repairs and relines.”

“I never would’ve thought I’d say I don’t mind going to the dentist, but now it’s not a chore. Dr. Bedi makes it easy.” – Karen

As he did with Karen, Dr. Bedi performs comprehensive evaluations and extensive treatment planning to help his patients achieve their best smiles. Every patient goes through the same process. The dentist wants to help them keep their own teeth for as long as possible.
“There’s nothing like having natural teeth,” he says. “For one thing, they’re essential for functioning, and enjoying food. Nothing has the chewing strength of natural teeth. They also maintain the appearance of the face.
“When people lose their teeth, they also lose the underlying bone that supports their lips and muscles, and their faces begin to collapse. When this occurs, they start to look old very quickly.”
Another reason it’s important for patients to keep their natural teeth healthy is for their general health, especially in the case of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease occurs when a bacterial infection weakens the gums, which can lead to loosening of the teeth and, eventually, tooth loss.
“The low-grade infection of periodontal disease has been linked to heart problems and other conditions,” Dr. Bedi warns. “The bacteria causing the infection can get into the bloodstream and travel to the heart and other parts of the body, causing disorders.”

This treatment involves a medication tray that’s placed over the gums. Dr. Bedi used this technique with Karen, whose treatment plan included oral surgery to eliminate the infection.
“I put a peroxide gel on the medical tray and put the tray in my mouth over my teeth,” Karen explains. “I use the tray twice a day along with an antibiotic. The medical tray is actually preventing tooth loss from gum disease and helping me to maintain a much healthier mouth than I ever thought I’d have.”

Teeth for Life

It took Dr. Bedi nearly two years to complete Karen’s treatment, which included a straightening program to correct her crooked teeth.
“We did that without having to cut down her teeth to make room for caps,” Dr. Bedi informs. “That’s important because, as I noted, we always work to maintain our patients’ natural teeth as much as possible. We want our patients to keep their real teeth for life.”
Despite the lengthy reconstruction process, Karen says she was never deterred, because she trusted Dr. Bedi would give her the results she hoped for. When all the necessary dental procedures were finished, Karen was more than happy to unveil her new smile to the world.
“My teeth look lovely,” Karen raves. “I’m very happy with what I have now. My smile is very good now, so I don’t hide it anymore. There’s no need to. My new teeth definitely make me feel better.
“It was very hard to be with people and talk with them when I had poor teeth, but having healthy teeth gives me more confidence. It makes me want to go out into the world and do things I would have otherwise avoided.”

Karen’s long avoidance of dentists was due in part to her fear of dentists and the anxiety she felt whenever she visited one. She curtailed her visits to minimize her discomfort, but her experience with Dr. Bedi has changed all that.
“I think a lot of people are like me and have a little fear of dentists,” Karen observes. “But Dr. Bedi is so helpful and so encouraging with everything he does. The information he gives me and the friendliness of his staff make me very comfortable. When I go to Anchor Dental Care, I know I’m going to be helped, and my fear goes away.
“I never would’ve thought I’d say I don’t mind going to the dentist, but now it’s not a chore. Dr. Bedi makes it easy. I’m definitely going to stay with Dr. Bedi and Anchor Dental Care as long as they’re around.”
