Revitalizing Smiles

Restoring teeth with Invisalign® and prep-less veneers

Stay-at-home mom Sumbul Mirza keeps a super busy schedule caring for her husband and one-and-a-half-year-old son in Hernando. Sumbul has always made time to care for others, but last year, a nagging dental concern forced her to finally make time for herself.

Dr. Kasim Manzur at Nature Coast Dentistry in Beverly Hills is restoring Sumbul Mirza’s teeth and smile with Invisalign® followed by prep-less veneers.

“When I was growing up, I was self-conscious about my teeth, but I never got around to getting braces,” says the Atlanta, Georgia native. “When I got a little older, my wisdom teeth came in. They crowded my other teeth, and I ended up with a couple of teeth that were really crooked. It made me uncomfortable with my smile.”

Sumbul eventually had her wisdom teeth removed, but that did not alleviate the problem with her crooked teeth. For years, she longed to have her teeth straightened and her smile revitalized. Finally, shortly after she turned 30, she stepped up and took action.

“I decided to finally get my teeth fixed, but I didn’t want to get metal braces at thirty-one,” she shares. “I just couldn’t go through that. Instead, I wanted to try the Invisalign clear aligner trays.”

With a treatment already in mind, Sumbul took to the internet to search for providers in the area who offered Invisalign. The one that stood out to her was Nature Coast Dentistry in Beverly Hills. That’s where she soon found herself in the skilled care of Kasim Manzur, DMD.

“Sumbul came to me with a mild to moderate crowding of her teeth, and her front teeth were rotated a bit,” reports Dr. Manzur. “We discussed conventional braces, but she did not want to go in that direction, so I gave her the option of Invisalign clear braces, which she was a good candidate for.

“She was also interested in brightening up her smile and changing the shape of some of her teeth. I told her we could do prep-less veneers as well, after the Invisalign treatment is completed.”

Two-Pronged Approach

Invisalign is generally successful for people with mild to moderate rotation or misalignment of their teeth, explains Dr. Manzur. Those with more significant issues, such as a need to expand the jaw, must be seen by an orthodontist for conventional braces.

“For Invisalign to be effective, it’s important that the patients are good candidates for the treatment,” notes Dr. Manzur. “We begin making that determination by taking models of the patients’ teeth. Then, we send them to Invisalign, and they tell us if the treatment will likely be effective for those patients.

“Invisalign also tells us how long it will take to get the desired results based on the models we send them. They also send us digital pictures of the patient’s mouth that show what the teeth will look like once treatment is completed. That way, the patient can visualize their results before treatment is even started.”

To begin Sumbul’s Invisalign treatment, Dr. Manzur attached small, composite buttons on several of her teeth. The composite used is similar to filling material, and the buttons are placed on top of the teeth without shaving down the teeth beforehand.

“These buttons are bonded to the teeth, and the composite material is tooth colored,” assures Dr. Manzur. “The buttons blend in with the rest of the teeth and are not really visible. They are not put on all of the teeth, just a select few.

“Those composite buttons are part of the Invisalign treatment. They guide the aligners in turning the teeth and bringing them into alignment. The trays themselves are not sufficient to do that. The buttons help push the teeth at the proper angle and guide them into place.”

Dr. Manzur adds that overall, Invisalign is a painless treatment. There’s no drilling or other preparation needed beyond placing the composite buttons. Patients put the aligners on top of the buttons and change the trays every two to three weeks.

“The length of treatment varies with each person,” he offers. “It depends on how much misalignment needs to be corrected. Typically, it takes between nine and twelve months to get the desired results.”

To complete Sumbul’s smile revitalization, Dr. Manzur suggested placing cosmetic veneers on her upper six and lower six front teeth following her Invisalign treatment. Veneers are shells of porcelain material that cover the front surfaces of the teeth. They can correct a host of imperfections including those associated with color, shape and size of the teeth.

“There are different types of veneers, and the type I plan to use on Sumbul are prep-less,” describes the dentist. “That means I do not have to shave down the teeth before applying them. With other types, I have to remove some of the tooth before bonding the veneer onto it.

“It is always best to remove as little of the tooth as possible when doing a cosmetic procedure like veneers. I do not want to lose vital tooth structure if I can prevent it.”

Big Smile Changes

Six months into her Invisalign treatment, Sumbul has begun to see big changes in her teeth, and they’ve had an impact on her appearance.

“I’m still in the treatment process, but I’m almost done,” she relates. “I have a couple of months to go, but even now, my smile has changed completely. My teeth are almost completely straight. You can see my teeth and lips more than before.

“My smile is already improved so much. It looks so much better. Everyone asks me what I did because I look different. I highly recommend Invisalign to anyone my age or older looking to straighten their teeth. I’m even trying to talk my mom into doing it.”

Before finding Nature Coast Dentistry, Sumbul got anxious every time she visited a dentist. But during her initial consultation with
Dr. Manzur, the dentist’s easygoing and calming approach eased her fear.

“Dr. Manzur was great and so nice,” she confirms. “I had been scared of dentists, but he made me feel really comfortable. He explained everything to me about my teeth and the treatment.”

The staff at Nature Coast Dentistry further helped ease Sumbul’s fears by providing personal attention and kind service.

“Dr. Manzur and his staff are great,” Sumbul stresses. “They made me feel comfortable right away. I didn’t feel nervous at all. They explained everything that was going to happen and what I should expect. They walked me through the whole process.

“The office is really clean, too, and that’s really important to me because I’m a germaphobe. Everything has to be really clean, and I check. It is clean at Nature Coast Dentistry, and that’s one of the things I like about them.

“My favorite part of Invisalign treatment at Nature Coast Dentistry is how quickly I got results,” she adds. “I don’t know why I waited so long. I wish I had done it sooner. I wish I had done it before I got married so I would’ve had straight teeth and a good smile for my wedding.”
