Priority One

Patient focus makes imaging center the clear choice.

It was nearly 30 years ago when Ileen Mulvihill, 72, injured her back while trying to lift a heavy object with a coworker. Little did she know at the time what that injury started and how it would affect the rest of her life.

Patient Ileen Mulvihill describes her experience with LAD imaging in Deltona. Center Director Barbara Borden discusses why LAD imaging should be “Your clear choice for imaging.”

Ileen is committed to
LAD imaging.

“I was using the proper lifting technique, but it didn’t make any difference,” Ileen recalls. “As soon as we started lifting, I felt a ripping sensation in my spine. I told my coworker, I can’t do this. I’ve got to stop and go to the hospital.

“In the emergency room, I found out I had pre-existing scoliosis, which I never knew I had. There were also collapsed vertebrae in my lower back. Once that injury occurred, my spine just started collapsing, and the curvature got worse and worse. To start with, I had surgery on my lower back, then on my neck.

“I used to work in the dental profession, in oral surgery,” adds the native Floridian from Miami. “Unfortunately, I became physically unable to work due to my medical conditions.”

The surgeries on Ileen’s back and neck were just the beginning. Her spinal condition continued to deteriorate, and she developed disorders in several other areas of her body as well. To diagnose then keep tabs on these disorders, Ileen required regular imaging tests. For that, she discovered an imaging center dedicated to patients’ needs.

“We were living in Winter Springs at first, then we moved to Deltona,” Ileen relates. “My doctor here told me I didn’t have to use the hospital radiology department for my imaging exams. He mentioned a local imaging center. That’s when I began going to LAD imaging. That’s how far back I go with them, nearly thirty years.”

LAD imaging is a fully accredited, outpatient imaging center in Deltona. It serves the community with a wide range of diagnostic imaging tests. These include traditional x-rays, computed tomography (CT), mammography, DEXA scans (bone density), high-field MRI and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), ultrasound (including four-dimensional OB images) and vascular studies.

“Over time, I developed a number of medical complications,” Ileen shares. “The scoliosis curve caused massive collapsing of my spine, and I had to have a morphine pump implanted. At that point, my heart and lung were becoming crushed. I had to have two ribs removed because they kept breaking due to the curvature. I also had twelve spinal discs removed.

“I’ve gone to LAD imaging for all my x-rays, CT scans and MRIs, from my spine to my shoulders, which were both replaced. I had a brain MRI done there because I had to have a brain implant. They do all my DEXA scans since I have critical osteoporosis. I have all my breast exams done there, and I had an MRI of my left knee, which was replaced.

“I recently needed an MRI of my right knee because it started to give me problems. My orthopedic surgeon wanted me to go to the hospital for the MRI. I said, No, I’m going to LAD imaging, where I always go.

Community Commitment

The staff at LAD imaging understands that diagnostic imaging is an integral part of health care. It helps to uncover new disorders and follow the course of existing diseases. High-quality images enhance patient-physician decision making and can reduce unnecessary medical procedures.

As an independent imaging center, LAD imaging has only one mission: to acquire high-quality diagnostic images with accurate interpretations so doctors have the best diagnostic information available when designing a treatment plan. Their vision is to create a pleasant, convenient experience for both patient and prescriber.

“LAD imaging has been serving the community for more than forty years, and our staff has established relationships with our patients,” asserts Barbara Borden, center director at LAD imaging. “The center is American College of Radiology® accredited [ACR.org] for all the modalities they accredit. That includes MRI, CT, ultrasound and mammography. And we participate in most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid.

“To accommodate patients with busy schedules, we are open six days a week, including Saturdays, and have extended hours. We take walk-ins for x-rays, which are the most common tests requested.”

Exam reports are read by LAD imaging radiologists and sent to the prescribing physicians usually within 24 hours for a traditional exam or about four hours for a STAT exam. That way, any necessary patient treatment can begin right away.

“There’s a credentialed radiologist on site from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day,” Barbara notes. “We work with a larger group of radiologists as well, so we have access to specialists in areas such as neuroradiology and musculoskeletal radiology to tele-read exams if needed.”

The environment at LAD imaging is welcoming and calming to patients. The registration area, the first point of contact for patients, is open and inviting, unlike many other centers and physician offices.

“There’s no window patients stand behind while waiting for someone to see their shadows through tempered glass,” Barbara describes. “As soon as patients walk in, an employee behind the desk sees and acknowledges them. After patients are registered, a tech comes out to get them for their exams.

“There are leather tall-back chairs patients can sit in while waiting, and there’s a beautiful saltwater fish tank that serves as a partitioning wall between the front door entrance and the waiting room. And the floor is covered with a striking tile. We get many compliments about the appearance of our interior.

“But in everything LAD imaging does, patients are our number one concern. They are the reason we exist. We’re here solely for their care and treatment. Providing quality patient care is LAD imaging’s top priority. That makes us the clear choice for patients’ imaging needs.”

“A Special Personality”

A lifting injury began Ileen’s nightmare with her spine. Her condition and overall health deteriorated from there. While she struggles with her medical issues, she’s glad she discovered LAD imaging to help her stay on top of her disorders. She credits the staff for making her experiences there easy and pleasant.

“LAD imaging is extremely accommodating, and everybody is always cordial and polite,” Ileen reports. “I just can’t say enough about the personnel. The staff in every department, from the front desk where I register to the department that does my DEXA scans, is totally professional.

“I worked in the medical field for two different medical schools and oral surgeons in Miami. I know it takes a special personality to deal with patients. You have to exhibit kindness, politeness and understanding. I can say that’s true about everybody at LAD imaging. As long as I live in this area, I will continue to use LAD imaging.”
