Nonsurgical Solution

Painless process uses vacuum effect to relieve back pain

As a missionary, Alfred “Mac” Owen, Jr., 82, ministered to souls seeking comfort in more than 40 countries, including the Philippines, Cuba, Honduras and Russia. Spreading the Word wasn’t his first choice of career. He started out as a filmmaker until he was called to ministry.Nonsurgical Solution

After VAX-D treatment, Mac can work in his yard again.

“When I was in the Navy, I learned the cinematography trade,” he recounts. “After the Navy, I began making documentary films about different Nonsurgical Solutionmission organizations and did that for quite a while. In 1983, the Lord changed my whole goal and outlook on what I was going to become.”
For years, Mac was plagued with pain in his lower back. The hours on his feet teaching and the miles walking as part of his missionary work made his back ache even more. It was part of the reason he finally retired a few years ago.
“I always said, It’s not the age, it’s the mileage,” he quips. “I’ve always had weakness in my back, and it got to where I could hardly walk. That essentially eliminated my mission work. Then, it became very painful just to walk to the mailbox. If I went out and worked in the yard, I’d have to sit in a chair. I needed to sit down almost all the time.
“I tried a lot of treatments, painkillers, therapy and everything else you can think of, but nothing worked. I knew my back was bad when a chiropractor showed me an x-ray of it from the side, and it looked like a question mark.”
Mac got renewed hope for relief from his back pain when he heard about Back Pain Institute of West Florida, the practice of Dr. Craig S. Aderholdt. Dr. Aderholdt often recommends vertebral axial decompression, or VAX-D®, to relieve persistent or chronic pain. VAX-D is a patented, FDA-approved medical decompression technique for alleviating pressure on the discs of the spine.
Dr. Aderholdt is one of the few doctors in the country who offers this treatment.
“By the time I got to Back Pain Institute of West Florida, I couldn’t work in my yard at all,” remembers Mac. “The first time I went, I had to lean on someone just to walk in the doorway. I was in pretty bad shape.
“Dr. Aderholdt told me the problem was with the discs in my back. They were bone on bone or just about ready to be. I signed up to do the VAX-D program, and I’m still on it.”

Vacuum Effect

Dr. Aderholdt stresses that while VAX-D is a medical decompression technique, it’s not a traction device. It works differently and achieves significantly better results.
“Chiropractic adjustments alone can actually relieve many patients’ pain,” he asserts. “For select people with sciatica, or herniated, bulging or degenerated discs, however, the VAX-D treatment has proven extremely effective.”
During treatment, the patient relaxes on a comfortable, computer-controlled table, secured with a pelvic belt or patented cervical collar, depending on the area to be treated. Carefully specified tension and pressure changes guide the use of VAX-D, allowing the therapist to focus decompression at the exact level of spinal dysfunction.
VAX-D’s computerized system enables the table to make subtle but targeted movements, which creates a powerful vacuum within the disc space. This vacuum gently draws the disc back to its proper orientation, pulling nutrient-rich spinal fluid into the disc and stimulating repair cells, effectively mending the disc.
“Nothing else can create such a powerful vacuum,” observes Dr. Aderholdt, “which is what makes VAX-D such a valuable tool for pain relief. There are imitators, but the vacuum effect is the most powerful one known; it doesn’t allow muscles to contract like other machines might. In fact, VAX-D is the only nonsurgical treatment that has been clinically proven to reduce disc pressure to negative levels.
“The VAX-D treatment has a long track record of many satisfied patients over the years. Long-term studies have actually shown that VAX-D is effective in more than eighty-eight percent of patients who go through the treatment.”
Mac began his treatment on the program, having one session a day, five days a week. The therapy impressed him, and he began to see a difference in his pain level early on in his treatment regimen.
“I was amazed by the treatment,” he confirms. “They put me on a table and stretched me. After the first two or three weeks of intense therapy, I started improving. Since then, they regulated me back a little bit. I only go once every other week now.”
“I consider VAX-D one of the most effective nonsurgical medical treatments for low back pain and sciatica today,” declares Dr. Aderholdt. “This revolutionary technology is one more tool I can offer my patients as we work toward relieving pain and maintaining the health of the lumbar and cervical spine.”

Young Again

Before Mac began treatment at Back Pain Institute of West Florida, he could barely walk and needed help getting in the office door. He responded quickly to the VAX-D therapy and continues to see positive results.
“After my VAX-D treatments, I can walk out to my car, and I feel young again,” he marvels.
Still undergoing treatment, Mac hasn’t realized the full benefit of the VAX-D therapy yet. But he’s happy with what’s been achieved so far. His agonizing back pain has been relieved, and he’s able to do most of his activities again, including working in his yard and walking. He knows he just can’t overdo anything physical.
“I don’t have any pain now, but if I bend over, my back hurts a bit,” reports Mac. “That’s why I’m careful and watch what I do now. If I walk long distances, my back still gets to me, but it feels a lot better.
“My treatment overall has been successful,” he enthuses. “Being a minister, I believe in miracles, and I’d say this is pretty close to a miracle.”
Mac may be retired from his missionary work, but he still feels the need to spread good news when he has it. Now, he’s spreading the news about VAX-D therapy and how it relieved his lower back pain.
“I definitely recommend the treatment. In fact, I shared my experience with some of my friends, and several went to talk to Dr. Aderholdt. So, I certainly recommend Dr. Aderholdt and Back Pain Institute of West Florida!”
