No More Neck Pain

Treatment with the MCU machine achieves relief.

Jeff Simms has always led an active lifestyle. In his youth, he ran cross country and was a pole vaulter on his high school track team. He later developed a love of surfing, cycling and has participated in several triathlons.
“I tend to gravitate toward anything that gives me a good rush, a thrill,” Jeff says. “I just love it.”

Jeff enjoys his work as a chef at The Breakers.

Also an avid fisherman, Jeff goes on eight-hour deep-sea fishing excursions at least once a week near his home in Palm Beach Gardens.
“I love the open water, and fishing is one of my favorite pastimes,” he says. “It’s a relaxing way for me to wind down from my busy weeks.”
For 21 years, Jeff has worked as the executive chef at The Breakers in Palm Beach. “I absolutely love my job, and I love living in Florida,” Jeff raves. “I never want it to stop. There’s too much to enjoy here.”
In recent years, Jeff found himself needing to put the brakes on this fast-paced lifestyle due to chronic neck pain.
“It was almost debilitating,” Jeff shares. “I would describe it as a dull, aching pain. Most of the time, it would hit me when I was at work, with my head down all the time chopping and preparing food. After twenty minutes of chopping, I would have to take a break because my neck would throb. The pain went up my neck and into the top of my head, and down my shoulder. This continued for several years. Then, it went away for a while, but came back with a vengeance.”
The captain of one of the fishing boats, referred Jeff to Active Health Center.
“I had tried many other treatments that didn’t work. I had nothing to lose,” Jeff recalls. “I was willing to give them a shot.”

Diagnosing the Issue

“Patients come into our office with a variety of symptoms – pain, headaches, numbness, tingling – but oftentimes these factors can be improved once we strengthen the neck,” explains Colin O. Behrue, DC. “In Jeff’s situation, he had been experiencing pain in his neck for several years and he dismissed it as normal, which is typical in a lot of cases we see.
“Before coming into our office, Jeff tried traditional physical therapy and pain injections, but none of the conventional treatment methods helped the problem,” Dr. Behrue continues. “In fact, when a patient has neck weakness and imbalance, traditional methods only plateau the issue. After a comprehensive examination, I recommended the MCU, or Multi-Cervical Unit, which works to isolate and strengthen weak muscles in the neck. I felt this was Jeff’s best option.”

“It’s worth every minute of your time. It really is a miracle!” – Jeff

Marc A. Weinberg, DC, explains that the MCU is both diagnostic and therapeutic. Once an individual has been through the diagnostic testing on the MCU to determine if they are a candidate, the treatment that follows is relatively easy.
“To be sure someone is a good candidate, patients go through a series of doctor supervised isometric exercises,” Dr. Weinberg explains. “They don’t need to move, but the machine records sixteen different ranges of muscle movement for strength. Once we use the testing functions of the MCU to find the source of weakness and/or imbalance, the patient then has their own specific treatment regimen on the MCU to fix the problem. There is no guesswork involved. This is called evidence-based medicine.
“After the testing was complete, our findings proved that Jeff would benefit significantly from MCU treatment. We got him started right away.”

Proven Results

Dr. Behrue states that there is specific research that indicates the MCU to be the absolute best way to strengthen the neck.
“It’s the part that gets left out of traditional neck pain care, yet all of the research shows that it’s a required piece for resolving someone’s neck pain. When it comes to neck pain and weakness, the MCU is the missing link.”
The treatment regimen is typically nine weeks; however, some people can begin to feel the results in just three to five weeks.

“Whether you have arthritis, a herniated disc or nerve related symptoms, if a person can strengthen the muscles around those weak areas, research has shown they can experience positive, long-lasting results,” Dr. Behrue informs. “Once the muscles show improvement, the pain will dissipate, which allows the underlying triggers to physically heal. This is exactly what happened with Jeff.”
Since Jeff began the treatment, his pain level has steadily decreased significantly. He stresses that a person needs to be committed to the regimen in order for it to be a success.
“I was going three times a week for nine weeks,” Jeff says. “It is a commitment. As long as you stay focused and determined, it will be a huge benefit in the long run.
“You have to be willing to take the time to see it through. The MCU really helped me in ways I never thought possible. I had tried everything else available. I am amazed at how much stronger my neck is now.
“I can turn my head from side to side and bend my head down without pain when I am at work preparing meals. I can also go deep sea fishing again for hours at a time without restriction. I have been pain free for over a year now without needing any further treatment.
“It’s worth every minute of your time. It really is a miracle!”
