Feel Younger, Stronger, Sexier

BHRT restores couple’s energy, vitality.

In 2005, at the age of 20, Laura Rutledge packed up her belongings and moved from her hometown of New Providence, NJ, to Tampa to finish her education at the University of South Florida.

“Two years later, I graduated with a degree in exercise science and became a personal trainer,” Laura says. “Today, my husband, Jonas, and I own a gym in New Tampa.”

Personal training was a logical career choice for Laura, who has always been active.

“I’ve participated in sports my entire life,” she recounts. “I started out with gymnastics, which rolled into cheerleading. I played lacrosse as well. When it came to work, I wanted a job where I could help people and change their lives.

“I tried teaching but found that wasn’t for me. I worked with a personal trainer when I was in high school and college, and I fell in love with that career, so that’s what I’ve been doing since I graduated from USF.”

Jonas is a Gainesville native and, like Laura, he has been active since early childhood.

“I’ve been involved with sports and fitness since I was 6 years old,” Jonas, 39, confirms. “I started out playing football, then branched out into track and basketball. Those are my three main sports, but football is the sport I excelled in.

“I attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas on an athletic scholarship. I played football for four years in college and a couple of years professionally for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans and Miami Dolphins. I was a defensive back and return specialist. From the pros, I transitioned into the personal training and fitness industry.”

Laura and Jonas were naturals as personal trainers, but eventually, they wanted to do more with their careers. The logical next step was to own an exercise studio.

“Our programs are all group fitness training sessions,” Laura describes. “Members perform a lot of weightlifting, but there’s quite a bit of cardio to go with it. The nice thing about our programs is that they incorporate meal planning and nutritional guidance, so our members get everything they need for healthy living right in our studio.”

“As personal trainers, Laura and I coach the members,” Jonas adds. “But we also handle the operations of the studio as far as marketing and advertising and overall studio growth. We manage the day-to-day business as well as member relations.”

Crashing Workouts

Jonas and Laura practice what they preach. They exercise regularly and maintain other healthy lifestyle habits, such as eating a nutritious diet. But a few years ago, Jonas noticed that he was hitting a wall with his workouts and was experiencing other bothersome symptoms as well.

“My workouts weren’t as productive as they had been,” he admits. “My energy level was decreased, so I would get halfway through a workout and feel like I was crashing. My sleep was interrupted, and I lacked focus and clarity. I didn’t know where these issues were coming from.

“I met Michael and Kathleyn Montemurro from Infinity Medical Institute in 2016 while I was working at a different studio, and I told them about my symptoms. They recommended that I visit their Institute and have some blood drawn to determine if I could be helped by any of the services they offer.”

Michael Montemurro is president of Infinity Medical Institute in Tampa. Kathleyn is his wife and business partner. Their practice is recognized as the premier center in the region for bio-natural hormone replacement therapy, or BHRT. The Institute also offers a full line of cosmetic services and has a division that concentrates on men’s health issues.

During Jonas’ first visit to Infinity, his blood was drawn and the results were evaluated. A treatment plan was developed based on those results.

“From the bloodwork, they concluded that my testosterone level was low,” Jonas reports. “And my low hormone level was made worse by stress, the stress I put on my body from sports as well as the stress of everyday living. We decided to use BHRT to increase my testosterone level.”

An Identical Match

Infinity Medical Institute provides BHRT in the form of bio-natural L3 hormone pellets, which are derived from plants. The natural material is molecularly changed in structure and function for a 100 percent bio-identical match to the body’s hormones. Synthetic hormones, by contrast, can be as little as 6 to 8 percent bio-identical, which can prove problematic.

“Hormones affect everything, including our growth through childhood, our sexual development, our moods, how we break down food, our sleep patterns, stress, how much weight we gain – just about every function in the body, big and small,” explains Moriah Moffitt, MD, a physician on staff at the Institute. “They also play a role in many health conditions such as diabetes, an over- or underactive thyroid, osteoporosis, obesity, anxiety and depression.

“Our bio-natural L3 pellet hormone therapy helps to give effective results as we provide patients with a product that is all natural, and we stand behind it. It is the most effective hormone treatment on the market because it is replacing natural, normal hormones with biologically identical hormones that the body is used to seeing, rather than synthetic versions of the hormones.

“Through our bio-natural hormone replacement therapy, patients achieve consistent absorption of the proper, predictable levels of the hormones their bodies require for optimum health,” Dr. Moffitt adds. “This is done through the simple insertion of a pellet approximately every three months.”

Patients with hormone deficiencies are carefully evaluated before they are treated with bio-natural L3 hormone pellets, which are about the size of a grain of rice. Patients are examined to ensure they are healthy and fit enough to undergo the therapy.

“Once they are determined to be good candidates, a small incision is made in the buttocks or in the flank area,” explains Teresa “Tami” McGarry, PA-C, a certified physician assistant at Infinity Medical. “A small tool is used to insert the pellets beneath the skin into the fatty tissue. The procedure takes about 15 minutes and is performed using a local anesthetic.

“Patients return a month after initial pellet insertion. We once again draw blood to determine if they are receiving the proper amounts of hormones. Sometimes, we boost the hormones at one month, depending on how the patient responds to the first round of pellets.

“After the first week and a half, I noticed that my energy level was changing. I was sleeping better and wasn’t as stressed.” – Laura

“Beyond that, we draw blood every three months to ensure that the patients are maximized at the optimal hormone levels.”
“We make sure that the treatment we administer is going to be the overall best course of action for that patient,” Dr. Moffitt observes. “We are very thorough with the labs at every visit in order to see what has changed and what needs to be altered.

“We want to be certain every patient feels the best they possibly can. We not only look at their labs, but we also look at their overall health because other issues such as diabetes and high blood pressure can affect how the treatment is administered.”

The bio-natural L3 hormone pellets break down over four to six months, but it’s typically at the three-month point that the pellets begin to lose their effectiveness. That’s why Infinity Medical Center provides an additional round of pellets every three months.

“Giving new pellets every three months keeps patients at equilibrium with their hormones optimized,” Tami educates. “That is why pellets are superior to injections. With injections, the patient is depleted, then gets a big boost for a short time that then wears off. So the testosterone level seesaws from low to high, low to high then low again.

“The hormones in the pellets are time-released, and the body breaks them down over time. We achieve a level where patients feel their best and we keep them there with very little depletion and none of the seesaw effect that occurs with injections and creams.”

Double Whammy

Jonas received BHRT from Infinity Medical Institute from 2017 to 2018 and achieved excellent results. His testosterone was boosted to a healthy level that restored his energy and helped to recharge his workout routine. Seeing this, Laura knew exactly where to turn when she became plagued by uncomfortable symptoms this year.

“Jonas and I have three children, three girls,” Laura relates, “but I’ve also had four miscarriages in the past. I knew for a while that something was going on with my body, and I just pushed it aside.

“But earlier this year, after I turned 35, I noticed I was tired all the time and couldn’t cope with stress like I used to. I was irritable and little things bothered me. The way my children chewed their food upset me, and I didn’t like the way my husband yawned. In my head, I knew it was crazy, but I wasn’t myself. My sleeping was off, and I was always exhausted. I decided it was time to visit
Infinity Medical Institute.”

Feeling a little sluggish himself at the time, Jonas accompanied Laura on her trip to Infinity Medical, where he was hoping to get a booster dose of testosterone pellets that would help him regain his previous energy and activity level.

“We were about to participate in a couple of fitness shows, so I wanted to make sure my body was fine-tuned and operating at peak performance,” he explains. “So I went back to Infinity Medical Institute for an additional pick-me-up of my testosterone level.”

Both men and women need testosterone to feel vital as they age, but men need a higher level. Testosterone levels tend to start dropping in a person’s mid-30s and continue dropping slowly over time.

“As testosterone depletes, people begin feeling a loss of energy, poor sleep and mental confusion, at times feeling that they cannot remember their thoughts,” Tami informs. “Low testosterone can sometimes cause anxiety and depression.

“Optimizing testosterone can reverse those symptoms and help people build lean muscle, ward off abdominal or visceral fat, and stay strong.”

When a person’s hormones that were out of balance are brought back into equilibrium, their body can once again function synergistically, like it did when the person was younger and their hormone levels were optimal. When the body works synergistically, bothersome symptoms disappear.

“At that point, the mind settles down, and anxiety and depression improve,” Tami states. “People sleep better at night, and better sleep helps with the other symptoms as well. As overall testosterone increases, muscle strength and vitality of the bones improves, so there is less bone achiness and joint pain.

“Increased energy helps with weight loss and improves exercise tolerance, helping to build muscle mass. Increased energy results in an overall improvement in sexual health as well.”

“A Happier Person”

Upon their arrival at Infinity Medical Institute, Laura and Jonas first met with Kelly Woodruff, the practice’s business development manager. Kelly discussed Laura’s concerns and answered her questions about BHRT.

“After meeting with Laura and Jonas, I arranged for their blood to be drawn,” Kelly notes. “We are fortunate to be one of very few facilities in the area that offers in-house blood draws. Because their blood was drawn and spun in-house, we were able to provide their results the next day.”

Kelly is eminently qualified to consult with patients on BHRT, a treatment she has personal experience with.

“I have always been an active person, very energetic, a go-go-go person,” she describes. “And I’ve always had my weight under control. At one point, I started feeling tired. I hit a wall at 3 o’clock in the afternoon, and I started packing on the pounds. My hair started to thin, and my face was breaking out. I just wasn’t my best self.

“After meeting with someone, we discovered that my testosterone level was in the gutter. But within two weeks of beginning pellet therapy, I started feeling better and all my symptoms improved. Before long, everything got back on track again.”

Tami performed Laura’s blood draw, which revealed a double whammy of hormone deficiencies: Her testosterone and progesterone levels were extremely low.

That made Laura a perfect candidate for BHRT, so Tami recommended BHRT pellets to increase Laura’s testosterone and dissolvable tablets to be taken every evening to boost her progesterone.

“At first, I was a little nervous about hormone replacement therapy because I had heard so many different stories about it,” Laura recalls. “Some people love it, some hate it and some are completely against it. So I did a lot of research and talked to
Jonas about it.

“Then I talked with Kathleyn and Kelly. They explained everything very clearly to Jonas and me and were able to show us what was going on in our bodies. After that, I felt very comfortable with Infinity Medical Institute and what they offer.”

Laura and Jonas also realized quick results after beginning pellet therapy.

“After the first week and a half, I noticed that my energy level was changing,” Laura relates. “I was sleeping better and wasn’t as stressed. By the end of the month, I could see that my body was physically changing. I lost weight and put on lean muscle. I also felt calm and could handle my anxiety and stress. I felt like a happier person.”

“I could feel a difference within the first month of treatment,” Jonas reports. “By the middle of month two, I really started noticing my body changing. My overall body weight was dropping, but I was gaining lean muscle. When I went for my first follow-up appointment, my hormone levels were excellent, so we knew the treatment was working.

“Our actual results were more astounding than what we anticipated as far as how quickly the pellets acted and how much our bodies benefitted from the therapy. The whole experience was above and beyond what we expected.

“We absolutely recommend BHRT at Infinity Medical Institute. If someone feels that something is off with their body, they should at least go in for a consultation and have some bloodwork done. It could make a world of difference for them.”
