Stop Abnormal Bleeding

OB/GYN

According to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 600,000 women undergo hysterectomies each year. Many are performed to treat heavy bleeding; now, there is another option.

Dani Morabito says that in July 2007 she passed a clot during her period.

“I had excessive bleeding and extreme cramping with every period,” confides the 37-year-old.

“I proceeded to see four different gynecologists, all of whom indicated that my condition was normal. I was put on birth control pills to regulate my cycle, but they didn’t regulate it. I had an IUD inserted. It didn’t work; instead I bled for two weeks out of every four and suffered harsh discomfort. The IUD was removed and I tried two more forms of birth control but nothing worked. You can imagine my frustration.”

She says that a hysterectomy was discussed, but because of the seriousness of the procedure, its extended six-week recovery, the high number of complication risks, and the fact that it could throw her into an early menopause, it was not pursued.

“Then, in April 2009, a friend of mine referred me to Dr. Surattanont,” recounts Dani.

Surichya Surattanont, MD, who is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, practices with Bradenton Women’s Center.

“I found her to be extremely friendly, informative, and knowledgeable ,” recalls Dani. “She offered a solution where everyone else had nothing effective to offer me.”

Her Option® Cryoablation

“When I first met Dani, she told me she had tried various treatments to reduce her excessive bleeding,” remembers Dr. Surattanont. “However, the treatments failed to help her and she was at the point where her condition was interfering with her work and causing her an exorbitant amount of pain.

“I spoke with her and we discussed all of her options,” reflects the doctor. “In the end, we decided that uterine cryoablation would be a good choice for Dani.”

Dr. Surattanont recommended Her Option ® , a process of cryoablation which is an ultrasound-guided technology that uses extreme temperatures to freeze the lining of the uterus.*

“For treatment, our patient is in the same position as when she has her Pap smear,” describes Dr. Surattanont. “A wand, or probe, is carefully inserted into the uterus and lowered to nearly one hundred degrees below zero. By freezing the uterine lining, we are destroying the layers of the uterus that produce the heavy bleeding and blood clots.”

Dani says that once they decided that Her Option would be a good choice for her, Dr. Surattanont performed several procedures leading up to the ablation to help ensure a good result.

“After making sure Dani’s Pap smear was up-to-date, I did a sonogram to ensure that her uterus had no fibroids or anything unusual and that there was no abnormal pathology in relation to her ovaries. She wasn’t pregnant and then performed an endometrial biopsy. Once it substantiated there were no precancerous cells or abnormal pathologies, I did a sonohysterogram, the purpose of which is to image the inside of the uterus and check for any pathology or structural defects that would account for this abnormal bleeding. It also enabled me to see her uterus and measure its size, which helps me decide exactly how and where to place the Her Option wand and to determine the time that will be involved for optimal results.”

Dani says she truly appreciates the thoroughness of Dr. Surattanont.

“Since I had the procedure, I have only two to three days of minimal spotting each month,” says Dani. “The PMS, irritability, excessive flow, and extreme pain are gone.”

* Her Option is compatible with Essure , a permanent in office birth control procedure offered by Dr. Surattanont.
